Once you learn a few tricks with Firefox, you will be able to get information from the Internet much faster than with any other browser. Two basic ways to speed up your surfing are tabbed browsing and keyboard shortcuts
One of the best features of Firefox is the tabbed browsing. It allows you to surf many web pages at once in the same browser window, which helps you to keep from getting lost. To open a link in a new tab, either middle-click on it with the mouse, or hold down the CTRL key and left-click on a link with the mouse. The black arrows in the image below each point to different web pages, each loaded in a different tab. There are four web pages open in this example, but you can have dozens of pages open at once:
Either method of opening a link in a new tab, either middle-click with the mouse, or CTRL-leftclick, will cause the link to load in a tab behind the current page that you are viewing. You can open up many tabs this way and then switch between the different tabs by clicking on them, or by using the keyboard shortcuts mentioned below.
There are many useful keyboard shortcuts in Firefox. These are a few that will allow you to do many tasks faster because you won't have to continually reach for the mouse.
| Key Combination | Result |
|---|---|
| CTRL-T | Opens a new tab. |
| CTRL-W | Closes the current tab. |
| CTRL-TAB | Switches tabs, moving to the right. |
| CTRL-SHIFT-TAB | Switches tabs, moving to the left. |
| CTRL-U | Opens a window with the source code of a page, colored nicely so that you can easily read it. |
| CTRL-R | Reloads the current page. |
| CTRL-D | Adds the current page to your bookmarks. You can also choose to bookmark all of the open tabs in a folder. That is one way to save your current browsing session for later. |
| CTRL-B | Opens your bookmarks in the sidebar. |
| CTRL-H | Opens your history in the sidebar. |
| CTRL-K | Puts the cursor in the search engine box on the top right corner of the browser. |
| CTRL-L | Puts the cursor in the address bar so you can enter a new URL. |
