ActiveCollab used to be a free project management and collaborative software that was a great alternative to services like Basecamp and Goplan. ActiveCollab is no longer open-source. There is a new alternative though.
I just discovered an open-source fork of ActiveCollab called ProjectPier. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising.
There is an interesting discussion in the ProjectPier blog about getting Dreamhost to create a 1-click install for ProjectPier.
I'm interested to hear what people's experiences have been using the different collaborative project software. I am using a combination of the open-source ActiveCollab 0.7.1 and Basecamp for my projects.

I've tried Basecamp, but it turned out to be a communication tool mostly. It lacks features vital for project management. I mean Gantt charts for example. activeCollab seems to be another Basecamp clone. I've never used it since I don't like the whole Basecamp conception. Please, take no offence. I track my projects in Wrike http://www.wrike.com. It's a simple email integrated tool. You can edit tasks in a wiki like style and stay on the same page with your team and partners.
